Kendrick chose Kimberly Creek Retreat as the setting for his proposal, with one particular location in mind: the Grotto.

Hidden among the natural beauty of the retreat, the Grotto had the atmosphere Hannah loved—intimate, romantic, slightly mysterious, and surrounded by the kind of scenery that felt cinematic after sunset. It was the perfect place to create a proposal inspired by the moody romance and woodland magic of Twilight.

But bringing Kendrick’s vision to life took time.

Over the course of several months, we visited and scoped out the location more than once. We considered the way the space would look at night, how the lights would glow throughout the Grotto, where Hannah and Kendrick would walk, and how every detail could come together naturally without giving away the surprise.

The planning was intentional from the beginning. Every visit brought us closer to creating an experience that felt less like a photoshoot and more like a memory unfolding in real time.

Building the Surprise

On the day of the proposal, Kendrick arrived early to help prepare the space.

Together, we began stringing lights throughout the Grotto, transforming the quiet location into something warm and glowing. Once he left to get ready and bring Hannah back later that evening, the final details began to take shape.

We staged LED candles throughout the space, arranged the flowers Kendrick had delivered beforehand, and added every extra detail he had thoughtfully chosen for Hannah. White lanterns created a soft glow beneath the lights, while roses lined the trail leading toward the proposal spot.

As the sun disappeared and the evening grew darker, the Grotto slowly transformed.

Twinkling lights reflected against the surrounding landscape. The candles created a warm, intimate path. Flowers softened the space, and the entire setting began to feel like something from an alternative love story—a little mysterious, beautifully imperfect, romantic, and completely personal.

All that was left was to bring Hannah in without letting her know what was waiting.

The Perfect Distraction

Later that night, Hannah and Kendrick arrived at Kimberly Creek Retreat.

To keep the proposal a surprise, we started with photos near one of the retreat’s beautiful dome cabins. The setting gave us the perfect opportunity to capture relaxed, natural portraits while allowing Kendrick to settle into the moment.

The photos created just enough of a distraction before Kendrick began leading her toward the Grotto.

Then, little by little, the surprise began to reveal itself.
