Darian + Brian’s Winter Engagement Session at Kimberly Creek Retreat | Nebraska Engagement Photographer

There’s something special about slowing down in the middle of winter and celebrating love in a way that feels intentional, playful, and real. Darian and Brian’s January engagement session at Kimberly Creek Retreat was exactly that — a cozy, adventurous evening filled with laughter, champagne spray, golden sunset light, and the kind of candid moments that tell a story naturally.

As a Nebraska engagement photographer, these are the sessions I love most: documentary-inspired, emotional, relaxed, and centered around genuine connection instead of stiff posing. From the moment we started walking through the property together, it felt less like a photoshoot and more like spending an evening with old friends celebrating a really exciting season of life.

Kimberly Creek Retreat provided the perfect backdrop for their engagement session. Even in January, the property carried so much warmth and character. The open landscapes, natural textures, soft winter colors, and glowing sunset light created an atmosphere that felt intimate, cinematic, and romantic all at once. Winter engagement sessions in the Midwest often have a quieter energy to them, and this evening captured that beautifully.

Darian and Brian wanted their session to feel authentic to who they are, so we approached the evening with movement, storytelling, and experiences woven throughout the session. We played games, wandered through the retreat together, laughed constantly, and created space for genuine moments to happen naturally. Some of my favorite images came from the in-between moments — the laughter after a joke, hands reaching for each other while walking, and the excitement that comes with counting down the days until your wedding.

Of course, no celebratory engagement session is complete without champagne. As the sun dipped lower into the Nebraska horizon, they popped champagne and sprayed it into the air while laughing together in the fading golden light. It was carefree, messy, joyful, and perfectly symbolic of this season of their relationship. These are the moments that make documentary-style engagement photography so meaningful — real memories preserved exactly as they felt.

Sessions like this are why I love storytelling photography so much. Engagement photos should feel like you. They should capture your personalities, your connection, and the energy of your relationship in a way that feels timeless years from now. Whether that means hiking through nature, sharing drinks together, dancing at sunset, or simply walking hand-in-hand through a meaningful place, I always want couples to feel fully present during their session.

For couples planning engagement photos in Nebraska, Kimberly Creek Retreat is such an incredible location choice. The property offers a mix of natural scenery, open space, cozy atmosphere, and romantic Midwest charm that photographs beautifully in every season. Winter sessions here especially create a moody, cinematic feeling while still allowing space for warmth and connection.

Darian and Brian’s engagement session felt adventurous, emotional, playful, and full of life — everything engagement photography should be. I left the evening feeling incredibly grateful to document this chapter for them and even more excited for what’s ahead in their story together.

If you’re searching for a Nebraska engagement photographer, destination engagement photographer, or candid storytelling photographer for your wedding season, I’d love to help create something intentional and authentic for you. My approach focuses on documentary-inspired imagery, emotional storytelling, movement, connection, and creating photographs that feel natural rather than overly posed.
